We have been very fortunate to have stayed busy this month despite the suboptimal weather. Our HVAC decommissioning service has stayed surprisingly active for the wintertime. Also, our phones are ringing off the hook with folks wanting their light bulbs disposed of. Starting to deal with that waste stream was definitely one of the best decisions we made this year. Now if we could only figure out a way to increase our lithium ion battery flow…but I guess you gotta have some goals for the new year

Sorting another load of fluorescent lights prior to getting shipped out today. For sure this is my least favorite waste stream that we deal with. But, for some reason I find it hard to not take them #environmental #lightbulb #universalwaste

Now that we are finished with our window salvage project it’s back to the “regular” jobs. Today we demolished a mobile home near Watt and Folsom. Blakely jumped in the operator’s seat and put in some good work!

Here is the full video from our homeless encampment clean up. All told we removed 140,000 lbs of trash. We also recycled a ton of Ewaste, tires, light bulbs, paint, needles, and biohazard materials. It was a big project and our team worked really hard to get everything done in two weeks. Up till now we haven’t done too much battery recycling. Lead acid batteries have relatively little value. Sometimes I forget how big some of these units are that we salvage until you see them next to our Hyster. On a completely unrelated note the HVAC salvage market is going through a big shake up. With the introduction of 454b the price of recovered R22 and 410a are bottoming out. Did you know that despite being a wonderful part of the clean energy transition solar panels are actually considered to be 'Universal Waste'? They contain lead, selenium, and cadmium, which means they can't be disposed of in a regular landfill. Instead, solar panels need to be 'recycled.' What does that actually mean? It means that solar companies either call us to come pick up their panels or they drop them off at our yard. We then send the panels to a downstream vendor who then ships them to South Korea for further processing. Many companies are trying to refine the recycling process but to my knowledge this is still a very imperfect technology with relatively low recovery rates.

I try to explain to people that if you don’t do a video inspection you won’t really know why there was a blockage. I get a lot of messages asking about the lack of stakebed panels on our truck. We used to run them but I felt they were actually unsafe because they don’t allow you to actually rig anything and if anything does shift during transport it will break those panels immediately. So, despite the fact that our truck often looks a little Frankensteinesque I believe this to be the much safer method. Plus we love rigging #hvac #hvaclife #recycle #salvage

“What is the relationship between recycling and demolition?” I get this question a lot. It kind of surprises me since our journey into doing both occurred so organically. When we first started we worked with mostly electricians, plumbers, and solar companies. We would grade, sort, store and transport metals. But once we got our 608 certification and started decommissioning all kinds of HVAC equipment we basically acquired the knowledge, tools, and network required for demolition. Now we are pretty close to 50-50 and I find I really enjoy the variety and diversification of income streams #demolition #salvage #recycle #excavator #environmet
